Philosophy, team policies, expectations for students, and parents

Team Rule

Don’t do anything that tarnishes the reputation of our team, our school, or our community.
Coaching Philosophy

Your daughter is important to us. As coaches we are here to teach, encourage, and guide your child. It is our hope to provide a safe, welcoming environment that also challenges and develops her abilities on and off the lax field. Our core values include emphasizing sportsmanship and fair play, developing a culture of respect, and being positive role models. Every player on the team is an integral and necessary part of our plan for success. Working together as a team is more important than individual success.  At the varsity level our goal is to win games, but we never want to lose sight of the big picture; winning is important, but life lessons are more important than winning.
Mission

Our mission is to provide your daughters with the skills for success on and off the playing field.
Team Policies

Every player must attend practice every day. If a player must miss a practice it is her responsibility to let us know. In keeping with BFA policy that athletes are “students first” we try to be understanding when girls need to make up tests etc after school. We also understand that many students have other responsibilities. However, please understand
that lacrosse is a short season and we need girls to attend practice if our teams are to be successful. Please encourage your daughter to make up tests or get extra help in the morning whenever possible to minimize her time away from the field. If your daughter misses a practice it is her responsibility to notify coaches that she will absent. It is her responsibility to make up that practice time, alternative practice activities will be provided by the coaching staff. If your daughter is unable to make up the missed practice time she will not play in next game. Missing too many practices will affect your daughter's playing time (coaches discretion). Advanced notice of missed practice is required to fulfill practice obligation except in emergency.
School Attendance
Players are not allowed to practice or play in a game if they did not attend school that day. Players must remain academically eligible in order to practice or play as per BFA and VPA policies.

Spring Vacation
It is our policy that students who miss practices for vacation make up those practices before they can participate in games.    Please let us know asap if your student will be missing practice or games during spring break so that we can prepare a makeup practice plan for them. This way students can fulfill their obligations to the team.

VPA Loyalty Policy

The Vermont Principal's Association has instituted a team loyalty policy. Please read this policy in the BFA Athletic Activities Digest for Students and Parents. Please make sure to notify coaching staff in advance if your child will be participating in an event that will interfere with a practice or game for BFA Comet Lacrosse.
Communication Plan

Parents please take the time to read the BFA communication guidelines. We will be happy to talk to you about your child or your concerns at an appropriate time. Feel free to contact us within the above guidelines. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Hazing/Bullying Policy
In keeping with BFA and the VPA policies Comet Lacrosse will have zero tolerance of any behavior that is committed against a member of our team that humiliates, denigrates, demeans or endangers the health or safety of that student. Students are requested to report any such incidence to the coaching staff immediately.

Sportsmanship Expectations
It is our expectation that players (on and off the field) and parents on the side line will act in a manner that is respectful to opposing teams, officials, and spectators at all times. We understand that competitions can be exciting and somewhat stressful but we respectfully request that sideline behavior demonstrate sportsmanship at all times. Be advised that our team and coaching staff can be yellow carded for poor spectator behavior which may affect the outcome of the game.

Community Service
It is our belief that students should give back to their community. Varsity level players are requested to contribute their time to help develop our youth program. They should sign up and participate in at least 2 Phantom youth practices during the regular season. Players may also be requested to participate in group fundraisers, or activities that support various charity organizations
BFA Athletic Digest
It is the responsibility of the parent and student athlete to familiarize themselves with the policies in the athletic digest. We will adhere to said policies as written.

Thanks for taking the time to familiarize yourself with our team policies/philosophy. We will use this site along with our Sportsyou.com page to communicate with the teams as a whole. For example, if there is inclement weather you would need to check postings on the blog or SY for changes to the practice or game schedule.  We will also communicate with your daughter directly but she should be in the habit of checking one of these sites on a daily basis as well in case we miss her.
